The Importance of Fill Volume

The Problem:

When designing clear or translucent bottles, for example PET bottles for retail space, “target fill volumes” are an important factor to be aware of. Consumer can perceive that one bottle on a shelf has less product than another. Leading to a negative perception. Brand wants to ensure this does not happen.

The Importance of Fill Height

Several issues can affect proper proportions. A bottle's shape influences the fill volume's position. Certain shapes can create gaps between the cap and fill line, causing consumers to perceive the bottle as underfilled. If not identified early, this can be problematic. Overfilling results in lost revenue due to excess product.

Solution Mode:

Have SME’s assess 2D concepts from a geometric viewpoint before moving  forward with any concept. Build ”filling machine tolerances” into design volume calculations before building in CAD. Create min, max, and target fill using CAD to create accurate volumes and Keyshot for photo realistic renderings, then share with stockholders.

Final Outcome:

Created an in-house bottle volume tool accounting for wall thickness variations. Collaborated with an external partner to integrate it into CAD, reducing design change development time from an hour to minutes. Exported a file to Keyshot for accurate digital renderings of three target fills. Visuals are included in the design lock document and validated against production units.
